Real Steel

There's a reason why they call Hugh Jackman the nicest guy in Showbiz. And that's because he is. He even found humour in an interview full of cliche boxing puns. Well it is a genre ripe for the picking!

Unless you've been living under a rock, you'd be well aware that Jackman has been in town doing the publicity rounds promoting his new robot boxing blockbuster REAL STEEL. And firstly can I say that that three word synopsis 'robot boxing blockbuster' does not do the film justice. It is so much, much more than that.

Sure the film is set in a world, the not too distant future of 2010, where the sport of human boxing has been dominated by robot boxing. 9 foot bots programmed for destruction take down the house as they hook , smash and upper cut their opponents into a pile of scrap metal.

But this is just the spectacle of the film, at the heart is a father and son story, a tale of redemption, and a message to never give up. Jackman plays Charlie, a washed up boxer, a champ in his day, now forced to hussle for his livelihood by fighting his remote controlled boxing machines. He's a bad bet, both in and out of the ring. Enter his 11 year old, estranged son Max. Charlie has no time for Max and certainly does not need the added responsiblity. But the pair manage to connect over Atom, a robot constructed from the scrap heap who somehow manages to jab at everyone's heart. Even the innocent movie goer.

The fight scenes pack a punch and you will, despite yourself, find yourself gripping your seat, cheering for the robots. The fights are meticulously choreographed with world boxing champ Sugar Ray Leonard working on the film as the Boxing Consultant. Not only did he transform Jackman into a very convincing shadow boxer, he gave each robot its own fighting style.

Jackman is fantastic and holds his own against the 9 foot robots who are a combination of real, fully functional robot models (upon the advice of Executive Producer Steven Speilberg), and the use of motion capture technology - an evolution of the technology used in AVATAR . This makes them emotionally engaging and makes the film more than just another eye-popping trip to the cinema.

Hugh Jackman invited Movie News into the ring to chat about why he initially didn't think the film was for him, walks us through the technology, and then shares his experience of working with Sugar Ray Leonard, who helped him tap into much more than the physicality of his character.

Both this segment, and the film, is a Movie News must see.

Cars 2: Revving up to work at Pixar

When I grow up, I want to work at Pixar!

This is the only company with a 100% record, with every film becoming a huge hit.

What's their secret? Well, it may have to do with Pixar's distance from Hollywood, the collaborative artistic environment, or maybe it's just the eminent playground campus they work on with its innate sense of fun, and the 25 free breakfast cereals on offer!

Unitl CARS 2, TOY STORY was the only Pixar franchise to spurn sequels and it was then that Andrew Warne spoke to the animators and the creative teams at Pixar about the truly unique company and its unequalled winning streak.
