Sometimes life is stranger than fiction, and sometimes life makes the best feature films as writer / director Mike Mills proves in BEGINNERS.
Mill's father came out of the closet and declared he was gay after his wife of 45 years passed away. He was 75 at the time. At 80 he sadly also died, of cancer. BEGINNERS tells the story of the last five, fabulous and flamboyant years his son shared with his new, sexually aware dad.
Mills wrote the film just 5 months after his dad died but, as he told Movie News, he probably wouldn't have written and made the film if he wasn't in that very emotionally raw grieving process. The film is not a straight memoir or autobiography, instead Mills has used this event as a catalyst to tell a story about life and love, now and then, and how our lives are always beginning some new chapter. We are all beginners, we are always learning.
The film stars Ewan McGregor as Mike and Christopher Plummer as his dad. Quite a feat to land two Oscar-winning actors to star in just your second feature film. Mills wrote each of them a personal letter asking them to star, however he claims they simply liked the script. And as far as pay cheques go, well apparently the dog in the film was paid more than the actors!
This film is quirky and original, moving and humorous and is scattered with creative story telling devices and montages throughout, that are an obvious reflection of Mills' background as a graphic designer.
Movie News had the pleasure of sharing a very intimate chat with this very talented filmmaker, whose career we predict is just beginning.
